17 cops punished for racist Facebook comments

The NYPD has tracked down 17 cops who called West Indian Day paraders ?savages? and ?animals? on Facebook and has meted out varying degrees of punishment ? including holding out the possibility of firing four of them, a spokesman said yesterday.

The now-defunct Facebook page, headlined ?No More West Indian Day Detail,? contained about 150 racist comments, including ?I say, have the parade . . . drop a bomb and wipe them all out.?

?We identified 17 who made the offensive comments,? said spokesman Paul Browne, adding that investigators did not think any other cops were involved.

Besides the four most grievous offenders, six were forced to forfeit up to 10 paid vacation days and ?a third group received letters instructing them not to behave in a way that puts the department in a bad light,? Browne said.

But he added that no policy changes are expected before this year?s parade on Labor Day in Brooklyn.

None of the cited cops has been publicly identified.
