Condoleezza Rice slams Obama on foreign policy

Condoleezza Rice never addressed President Obama by name, but the former secretary of state delivered a sharp rejection of his foreign policy tonight, charging that the White House had forsaken past and potential allies, leaving the world to wonder, "Where does America stand?"

"When our friends and our foes, alike, do not know the answer to that question," she told the Republican National Convention, "the world is a chaotic and dangerous place."

Rice picked up on a theme laid out earlier tonight by Sen. John McCain who warned that "if America doesn't lead, our adversaries will, and the world will grow darker, poorer and much more dangerous." Rice criticized the president for taking a backseat to NATO during the battle for Libya and not doing more to stop the bloodshed in Syria.

"We cannot be reluctant to lead," Rice told fellow Republicans, who welcomed her to the stage with enthusiastic applause. "And you cannot lead from behind. Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan understand this reality, that our leadership abroad and our well-being at home are inextricably linked."

"Our adversaries must have no reason to doubt our resolve because peace really does come through strength," said Rice, who was secretary of state in President George W. Bush's administration.

Turning to concerns that a growing deficit could undermine American influence abroad, she focused on China.

"Just consider this," she said. "The United States has ratified only three trade agreements in the last few years and those were negotiated in the Bush administration. China has signed 15 free trade agreements and is in the progress of negotiating as many as 18 more. Sadly we are abandoning the field of free and fair trade, and it will come back to haunt us."

Working without a Teleprompter, Rice occasionally looked down at her notes, but mostly drove home her points with a fierce right hand.

And her speech did not stop at the shoreline as she touched on domestic issues, lines that won her some of her evening's most raucous applause.

"On a personal note, a little girl grows up in Jim Crow Birmingham, the most segregated big city in America," Rice said, talking about her childhood in Alabama. "Her parents can't take her to a movie theater or a restaurant, but they make her believe that even though she can't have a hamburger at the Woolworth's lunch counter she can be president of the United States -- and she becomes the Secretary of State."

That dream, she said was in doubt, as economic dislocation crushes opportunity in areas hardest hit by the slow recovery.

"Your greatest ally in controlling your response to your circumstance is in a quality education," Rice said. "Today, when I can look at your zip code and can tell whether you are going to get a good education. Can I really say that it doesn't matter where you came from? It matters where you are going. The crisis in K-12 education is a threat to the very fabric who we are."

It is an issue Rice knows well from her time as provost at Stanford University, which she returned to in 2010 to work as a professor.

Babies are lovely but altogether helpless creatures.

Wouldn't it be better if tiny humans were born able to walk, like horses, or generally were readier for the rigors of the world, like, say, chimps?

Among primates, human have the least developed brains at birth, at least when compared to adult human brains. If humans were born as far along on cognitive and neurological scales as rough and ready chimps are, though, human pregnancy would have to last at least twice as long. Eighteen months in the womb, anyone?

The prevailing explanation for why pregnancy doesn't last that long boils down to something called the "obstetrical dilemma." Humans walk upright. And the size and shape of our pelvises are constrained by our bipedal way of getting around in the world. If they got much bigger, mothers wouldn't walk as well. So babies' brains could only get so big and still fit through the birth canal, the conventional wisdom holds.

Now researchers at the University of Rhode Island, Harvard and the University of California, Berkeley, are questioning whether the theory is right. Instead of mechanical limits dictating how big a baby's head can get, they propose it's really about how much energy Mom can spare for the developing fetus.

"Mothers gestate a baby as long as they can metabolically," Holly Dunsworth, an assistant professor of anthropology at University of Rhode Island, tells Shots. She's the lead author of a paper advancing the metabolic hypothesis, an alternative explanation that's laid out in a paper being published online by the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. (A link wasn't available as of late Tuesday.)

She and her colleagues concluded that a human baby born at a chimp's level of development would require the average human birth canal to be about 3 centimeters bigger, an increase of a little more than an inch in diameter.

That's feasible, the researchers say. "We show that's within the range of variation now," Dunsworth says. "Those people with wider birth canals aren't walking any worse."

So what is the limiting factor? Apparently, it's how much energy Mom can divert from her own metabolism to the growth and maintenance of a fetus, the researchers say. We humans are able to crank up our metabolism to about twice its normal level and sustain that turbo mode for quite a while.

In fact, pregnant women's metabolism runs at twice the normal level by about the sixth month. By nine months, as the fetus's energy needs increase, the rate is pushing close to 2.1 times normal. And that's pretty much the limit. "Extending gestation even by a month would likely require metabolic investment beyond the mother's capacity," the researchers write.

What happens instead? Mom gives birth, and baby's growth rate slows (compared to its fetal self). Everybody's happy, though it must be said that there's a lot of coddling and many sleepless nights as the needy baby grows into a toddler.

One paper isn't likely to shove the obstetrical dilemma off the scientific stage overnight. But Dunsworth is confident the metabolic argument will hold up.

"Part of the older story is that the birth canal can't get any bigger," she says. "We've shown there's a much better explanation, and we've shown how hard it is to support the old explanation."

Media: Plane from Spain to Amsterdam not hijacked

AMSTERDAM (AP) ? Fears that a passenger plane had been hijacked en route from Malaga in Spain to Amsterdam's Schiphol Airport appear unfounded and a passenger says there is no hostage situation, Dutch and Spanish media reported Wednesday.

Spanish newspaper El Pais cited a spokesperson from the Spanish carrier Vueling as saying there was no hijacking and blaming the incident on a communication problem between the pilot and control tower.

National Dutch broadcaster NOS spoke by phone with a person it identified as one of the passengers on board who said that the plane was calm and there was no hostage situation.

The Vueling plane was parked at a remote corner of Schiphol, about two kilometers (1.5 miles) from the main terminal, surrounded by security personnel and several ambulances, according to photographers at the scene.

News website Nu.nl had reported that the plane was escorted to Schiphol by two F16 fighter jets. The report cited the Defense Ministry.

Airport authorities and security services did not immediately return calls seeking comment.

Suffering is a huge, unavoidable element in the human condition. To be human is to suffer. No one gets an exemption. It comes as no surprise then to find that our Holy Scriptures, immersed as they are in the human condition, provide extensive witness to suffering?

Lamentations, written out of the exile experience, provides the community of faith with a form and vocabulary for dealing with loss and pain?

Neither explaining nor offering a program for the elimination of suffering, Lamentations keeps company with the extensive biblical witness that gives dignity to suffering by insisting that God enters our suffering and is companion to our suffering.

Afghan officials: Insurgents behead 17 civilians

KANDAHAR, Afghanistan (AP) ? Afghan officials say Taliban insurgents have beheaded 17 Afghan civilians for taking part in a music event in a Taliban-controlled area of southern Afghanistan.

The Interior Ministry says the attack happened Sunday in Helmand province and that gunfire was also involved.

Helmand provincial government spokesman Daoud Ahmadi says the attack happened in Musa Qala district. Ahmadi says all of the victims had their heads chopped off. He says it was not clear if they were shot first.

The Musa Qala government chief says the people had gathered for a celebration and were playing music and dancing and the insurgents wanted to stop the event. Neyamatullah Khan says the area where the slaughter took place is completely in Taliban control and so he does not have more details yet.

17 cops punished for racist Facebook comments

The NYPD has tracked down 17 cops who called West Indian Day paraders ?savages? and ?animals? on Facebook and has meted out varying degrees of punishment ? including holding out the possibility of firing four of them, a spokesman said yesterday.

The now-defunct Facebook page, headlined ?No More West Indian Day Detail,? contained about 150 racist comments, including ?I say, have the parade . . . drop a bomb and wipe them all out.?

?We identified 17 who made the offensive comments,? said spokesman Paul Browne, adding that investigators did not think any other cops were involved.

Besides the four most grievous offenders, six were forced to forfeit up to 10 paid vacation days and ?a third group received letters instructing them not to behave in a way that puts the department in a bad light,? Browne said.

But he added that no policy changes are expected before this year?s parade on Labor Day in Brooklyn.

None of the cited cops has been publicly identified.

Northshore running back Marshall Wadleigh is the first to admit that sometimes the praise others heap on him can be a bit much.

After all, when you?re high school senior and your coach says, ?Marshall Wadleigh is one of the best human beings I?ve ever been around,? and one of your teammates says, ?Honestly, he?s the most perfect kid I?ve ever been around,? that?s a lot to try to live up too.

?People are always puffing me up, but I have some flaws,? said Wadleigh, who besides being the focus of the Panthers? offense, is a two-year team captain, student body treasurer and Ivy League-bound valedictorian candidate. ?I definitely have some flaws.?

To be sure, there are reports Wadleigh doesn?t make up his bed too well and he might not always eat his peas, but otherwise?.

?His character is flawless,? said Northshore Coach Mike Bourg. ?He set the bar so high and then leads by example on and off the field.

?He?s a pure football player who makes a team better just by being on it.?

It just so happens that making his team better is Wadleigh?s top priority.

The Panthers have been 2-8, 2-8 and 4-6 during his time at Northshore, although last year?s campaign did feature a sweep of city rivals Salmen and Slidell.?

?Northshore never really scares anybody,? Wadleigh said. ?But that?s going to change this year.

?We?re going to be a force to be reckoned with.?

That remains to be seen, but Wadleigh says he feels the Panthers are a much-matured and more-talented team than in recent years.

?We?ve got some guys who may not have played much, but they?ve showed what they?re made of this summer,? he said. ?We?re going to be ready to go.?

Bourg certainly hopes Wadleigh is ready to go. He plans to put the ball in his hands 25 times per game as a tailback in the Panthers? pistol offense.

The idea is that will set up play-action opportunities for strong-armed junior quarterback Dalvin Populist.

?Twenty-five times a game sounds good to me,? said Wadleigh, who averaged 13.7 carries per-game last year, gaining 804 yards, although he scored only four touchdowns. ?When you get the ball that much, you really feel like you can control the game.

?My goals are to gain between 1,500 and 2,000 yards and get a bunch of scores. But mostly I want to win.?

Wadleigh will have a good-sized line to run behind, led by 6-foot-5, 270-pound senior tackle Zac Collins.

The defense has only four returning starters, led by senior free safety Nick Houston and senior linebacker Gary Impastato. But Bourg is looking for a much-improved front seven that includes tackle Michael Chatman, who missed most of last season with a broken leg, and junior linebacker Brandon Ballard.

?It?s been a gradual progression since spring,? Houston said. ?But we?ve got a lot of guys who are playing with intensity and are really ready to step up.

?Everybody?s mentally grasping stuff the first time and you?re going to see 11 players getting to the ball.?

All of that has Bourg feeling good about his team in his sixth season at Northshore.

?We?ve still got a lot of growing up to do on the field and our schedule is one of the toughest in the state,? he said ?But I?m as optimistic as I?ve been.?

Certainly there are no questions about Wadleigh. A 5-10, 190-pounder with a 37-inch vertical leap and 4.5 40, he?s an effective downhill runner, which the Panthers? offense needs, and also a capable return man, as his selection to the All-District 6-5A team at that position last year demonstrates.

But it?s the intangibles which Bourg praises.

?You never hear a cuss word out of Marshall?s mouth and you never hear anybody saw anything about him,? he said. ?He?s got this little corner of the locker room where he sits and studies his playbook before practices and I can?t remember ever having to get on to him about anything.

?I know I talk about him like he?s my own kid, but I wouldn?t talk about my kids that way. He?s really the kind of kid you?d like your daughter to marry.?

A straight-A student who is active in the Beta Club and Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Wadleigh, who was a starting left fielder on the Northshore baseball team, said he would be involved in even more activities were it not for football.

Wadleigh?s playing career isn?t likely to end with high school. He toured Penn, Dartmouth and Harvard this summer and all have shown interest. He is undecided between majoring in engineering or business.

But first, there?s the upcoming season in which Wadleigh?s leadership will be as vital as what he accomplishes as a ball carrier.?

??It?s a lot of responsibility when you know you have people looking up to you,? he said. ?I try to set the best example by showing them if you do the right things you can have success in your studies and in football.?

But, Wadleigh adds, he is not one to get on to his teammates.

?I try to be more a behind-the-scenes leader,? he said.?

?What I tell the others is, ?Look, this is what we need out of you? and usually they respond.?

Ethiopian strongman Meles dies abroad

ADDIS ABABA (Reuters) - Ethiopian Prime Minister Meles Zenawi, who led the Horn of Africa country for more than two decades, died of an infection while being treated abroad for an undisclosed illness, state-run television said on Tuesday.

Speculation that Meles, 57, was seriously ill grew after he failed to attend an African Union summit in the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa last month.

"Prime Minister Zenawi suddenly passed away last night. Meles was recovering in a hospital overseas for the past two months but died of a sudden infection at 11:40 (on Monday night)," state television said.

Meles seized power in 1991 from Mengistu Haile Mariam's military junta. As president and then prime minister he turned Ethiopia into a key player in regional security affairs.

His forces, widely regarded as among the strongest on the continent, have entered Somalia twice to battle Islamist militants, winning him accolades from the West for supporting its fight against al-Qaeda linked groups.

State media said Deputy Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn would be the acting prime minister. Television broadcast footage of Meles against a backdrop of solemn, instrumental music.

Ethiopia's government said last month that Meles was taking a break to recover from an unspecified condition. Diplomats in Addis Ababa had said Meles was being treated in Brussels for an undisclosed illness, while others said he was in Germany.

LARGER-THAN-LIFE STATESMAN

During his time in office Meles was credited with steering Ethiopia towards economic growth and also helped mediate in several regional disputes, including rifts between Sudan and South Sudan.

"I believe that any successor to Meles will focus first on domestic issues and for the most part leave the regional and international engagement to other countries, at least until the new leader is firmly established in office," David Shinn, former U.S. ambassador to Ethiopia, told Reuters recently.

"For internal security reasons, there will be a continuing focus on Somalia and I do not foresee any significant change towards Eritrea," he said, referring to Ethiopia's arch-foe with whom it fought a decade-long border war.

But Ethiopia would be less willing to devote a lot of time and resources to problems further afield, Shinn said.

However, international rights groups say Meles was intolerant of dissent. Several opposition figures and journalists have been arrested under a 2009 anti-terrorism law.

State television said details of his funeral would be announced soon, the Horn of Africa country's first state burial in modern times.

Emperor Haile Selassie was laid to rest in 2000, 26 years after he was deposed. His body was found decades later beneath a palace lavatory in what forensic experts said were signs he had been murdered.

Another deposed leader, Mengistu Haile Mariam lives in exile in Zimbabwe.

David Tyler's discovery could reduce waste made in the methyl methacrylate process

EUGENE, Ore. -- University of Oregon chemists have identified a catalyst that could dramatically reduce the amount of waste made in the production of methyl methacrylate, a monomer used in the large-scale manufacturing of lightweight, shatter-resistant alternatives to glass such as Plexiglas.

David Tyler, Charles J. and M. Monteith Jacobs Professor of Chemistry, presented his findings Tuesday, Aug. 21, at the national meeting of the American Chemical Society in Philadelphia.

Global production of methyl methacrylate was 4 million metric tons in 2010. Each kilogram produced also yields 2.5 kilograms of ammonium hydrogen sulfate, a corrosive byproduct that is not usable. Disposal of ammonium hydrogen sulfate is extremely energy intensive, consuming 2 percent of the energy used in Texas annually.

Tyler's team has identified a catalyst that doesn't produce ammonium hydrogen sulfate.

"There were some really fundamental chemical reasons why previous catalysts didn't work with this process," Tyler said. "We've found a catalyst that overcomes all of those objections."

With the identification of a working catalyst, Tyler will focus his research on how to accelerate the conversion to methyl methacrylate. The industrial standard for a practical catalyst is conversion of acetone cyanohydrin into methyl methacrylate in the span of a minute or two, Tyler said.
